It has so many of the features that one looks for in a remote mountain property in Las Animas County or for that matter in Colorado. I show some photos below of some ponds and just so you know these are not on the property but they are on the Ranch Property on what we call the Small Acreage Parcels or Spanish Peaks Ranch, the 35 acre and larger parcels are located on Spanish Peaks Ranch Estates. But you can become a member of the Small Acreage Association and get access that is closer and easier to get this parcel. Ita€™s not much, I think $100-150 a year for access and then you can fish in the ponds and use their recreational area. We can get you more information on this but this is something that each property owner in the large acreage parcels can opt to do. There are a number of small homes and cabins in the small acreage area of Spanish Peaks Ranch which see a lot of summer time usage with people escaping the heat and enjoying one of the most beautiful areas of Colorado.
For the most part the access to either ranch is pretty much seasonal as the roads are not plowed for snow in the winter, at least not real close to parcel 8 or even in the small acreage lots. But you could hike or snowshoe in or even us a snowmobile when necessary or have the roads plowed. The roads to the property from within the ranch are not very improved and are passable yet it is slow going. So if you are looking for something remote this is just perfect.

So you have been dreaming of owning a nice size piece of land in Colorado and now you have come across our site and this listing. So imagine this. You drive to Colorado and like many people you come up from New Mexico. When you hit the state line at the Colorado border just north of Raton and south of Trinidad you want to do this drive in the day light. Because it is so amazing that just when you get to the State Line that you immediately know that you are in Colorado with those incredible mountain views. Then you keep driving past Trinidad about 28 miles or so to Exit 42, the Pryor Exit which is about 8-10 miles south of Walsenburg.
When you get off here it is only about 2 miles to the entrance to the ranch, Blackhawk Ranch. Then you enter the ranch go past the old foundations that were part of the old coal mine then keep going and go up a small hill and immediately take a right at top of the hill. You are now on 4 Mile Canyon Road and in the old days it was the road to the old Sawmill Flats where they milled a lot of the lumber for the coal mine. You wona€™t even know where its at now and you wona€™t see much sign of cut trees either except for a few old stumps here and there.
4 Mile Canyon Road winds and meanders down beside a old small seasonal creek bed through tall pines and rock outcroppings. This would be the way to your property if you fall in love with parcel 161. There are usually a few small catch ponds along this road as well as a few Texas Crossings where you might have to drive through a little water. And many times through out the day and year you will see plenty of wildlife along this road and you might see some mule deer, elk, wild turkeys, fox, and maybe even a black bear or two. Occasionally and rarely you might also see a mountain lion but they are a rare sight.
This is beautiful old Colorado and an really beautiful ranch and as private as it is you still have a number of homes and small cabins so you are not totally along, just private.

You actually have to go through the San Isabel National Forest to get to this property. It doesna€™t adjoin the National Forest but its not far from it.
There is an improved trail coming off of the County Road that takes you down to a very private camping site that is out on a point. The property drops off in three directions opening up to spectacular views looking to the east, south and west with vistas even down into New Mexico.
The tree coverage on the property is mostly Aspen, Spruce, Douglas Fir and Ponderosa Pine. The elevation of the property is about 10,200 and access to the property is going to be seasonal. The County Roads are not plowed either from the Huerfano County side near Cordova Pass or the Las Animas County Side past the main entrance to Spanish Peaks Ranch Estates. The current owners have snowshoea€™ed in quite a few times. The snow pack is not too bad but since the roads arena€™t currently plowed or maintained during the winter you just couldna€™t drive in. But I would bet you could certainly use a snowmobile to get there. That would be cool.
This is an dream summer property to escape the Texas heat and humidity. And there is a lot of wildlife sign such as elk, deer, bear and pretty much everything you expect to see in the Colorado Mountains and National Forest.
